Frank Drendel served as CommScope‘s CEO after founding the company in 1976 as a North Carolina corporation based in Hickory until the acquisition of CommScope by The Carlyle Group in January 2011. He has served as chair since 1997, when CommScope was spun off from General Instrument Corp. (subsequently renamed General Semiconductor Inc.) and became an independent, publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange.

Kristina McGrath is not just the name behind McGrath Automotive Group and McGrath Lexus. Kristina and her husband, Mike, are the owners of six Chicago area car dealerships and two of the Midwest’s biggest Lexus dealerships—and Kristina serves as director of customer service and public relations for the company.The McGraths have been active supporters of the NIU College of Business for years. The Mike and Kristina McGrath Entrepreneurship Initiative is the largest commitment in support of entrepreneurship in NIU’s history.

John L. Shigley is currently Executive Vice President of Operations at MGM Grand Hotel-Las Vegas. In this role he is responsible for strategic direction and operation of the Hotel, Food & Beverage, Entertainment, Arena, Facilities and Security divisions of the MGM Grand. John has over 22 years in the gaming industry and has held various positions in finance and general management including president of Primm Valley Resorts and Caesars Palace.

Playing a game changed Martin Cabrera Jr.’s life.When he participated in the Stock Market Game—a program that teaches financial literacy and the operations of financial markets. Cabrera was so motivated by the program that he decided to study finance, obtaining a bachelor’s degree from NIU in 1994 and furthering his studies at the London School of Economics.Cabrera started his professional career as a registered representative with Olde Discount Stockbrokers and found subsequent employment as a portfolio manager for Corporate Securities Group, Inc.

David Nelson began his career as a sales representative with American Hospital Supply Corp. and subsequently held a variety of positions, including two divisional presidencies. After the acquisition of American by Baxter International, he was named corporate vice president and president, Baxter OR Products Group, in 1987.Nelson joined Amsco International as president and CEO in 1988 and took the company public in 1991. Nelson left Amsco after tripling sales in seven years.Then Nelson was named president and CEO of Automated Healthcare, a startup robotics company.

After graduating, Robert Rothkopf built a career in the automotive and metalworking industries and has given back to NIU as a volunteer, philanthropist and instructor.He joined the Chrysler Corp. while he was a full-time student, completed an executive training program there and served as a foreman, shipping supervisor and production control supervisor.By 1970, Camcar Textron welcomed Rothkopf, and he worked his way up the ranks and became president in 1986. He then moved on to Elco Textron, where he served as president of the industrial products division.

Graduating from NIU and completing my education was truly a turning point in my life. It opened up many new and better opportunities to live life more fully and have confidence to take more risks.As Head of Investments, Nick P. Calamos oversees research and portfolio management for Calamos Investmentsfamily of mutual funds, closed-end funds, and separately managed accounts, totaling more than $44 billion in assets. Many of the firms mutual funds have received accolades throughout his portfolio management tenure.

Steve Hajdukovic has been with KPMG since 1990, when he started his audit career in the Oak Brook, Illinois office. Currently, he is a partner in the Chicago office, where he leads the Consumer and Industrial (C+I) Products audit practice and is the Partner Champion for alumni relations in Chicago. Steve has also served as the partner in charge of campus recruiting for the Midwest area and the Chicago office, as Human Resource Partner for C+I, and as a National Instructor.Today, Steve is actively involved at the NIU College of Business. He serves on the Accountancy Executive Advisory Council of Northern Illinois University,

When asked to choose a favorite memory of NIU, John Larson says, “all four years.”Larson is the CEO of Bestop Inc., a premier provider of accessories for jeeps, trucks, and all-terrain vehicles and the world’s leading provider of Jeep convertible tops. He is also the lead director for the board of KAR Auction Services, an automotive auction and finance company.He has been the keynote speaker at the National Leadership Education and Development Program(LEAD) and in the Krannert School of Management Executive Leadership Series at Purdue.

Somya R. Munjal is passionate about money management, which she sees as a tool to help people live their lives more fully. She is a certified public accountant and a certified financial educator committed to teaching people about their finances. After starting her career at Ernst and Young, LLP, Munjal worked for large corporations, financial institutions, small businesses, and startups in both the United States and abroad.
