NIU | 125 Key Moments(Ⅰ)

America’s most enduring institutions are those created to meet specific needs and allowed to evolve as those needs change. Such is the story of Northern Illinois University, which celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2020.

We marked the milestone with the recognition of 125 key moments in NIU history. The moments were suggested by the campus community, selected by a committee and released in monthly installments. Together, they form an intimate portrait of a growing university.

【Chapter 1: The Beginning】

 1895-1906 

伊利诺伊州州长约翰·彼得·阿尔特格尔德 (John Peter Altgeld) 是民粹主义和进步传统的拥护者。他对内战后经济扩张留下的那些人深表关切，认为师范学校的扩建将提升群众的教育水平。1895 年 5 月 22 日，他愉快地签署了创建北伊利诺伊州立师范学校的立法。

Illinois Gov. John Peter Altgeld was a subscriber to the populist and progressive traditions. He had a deep concern for those left behind by the expanding post-Civil War economy, and believed the expansion of normal schools would upgrade the educational level of the masses. He happily signed the legislation that created Northern Illinois State Normal School on May 22, 1895.

President Cook’s advertisements for the new school had shown a stately building surrounded by a green lawn and large trees, but the reality that greeted the first students was less pleasant: The building was not completed, and students had to step over tools and bags of cement in the hallways during their first few weeks.

First overseas students arrive in1904.Since then, NIU has developed a strong reputation as a welcoming and supportive university for international students. About 1,000 current NIU students represent 70 foreign countries, with the largest numbers coming from China, India and Saudi Arabia.Currently, NIU’s most popular majors for international students are Computer Information Systems; Industrial, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering; Accounting; and Business Administration.

【Chapter 2: Growth, Development – and War】

 1907-1929年

A beloved campus landmark is born, the student body diversifies, and world conflict touches everyday life in DeKalb. Up through its second and third decades of existence, Northern Illinois State Normal School experiences changes in governance and local leadership, with four different presidents and the beginnings of an expanded academic program.

By definition, “normal schools” only offered two-year degrees. John Williston Cook was offered the job as the first president of Northern Illinois State Normal School(1899).So strong was his belief in the normal school concept that he held off expanding the school’s curriculum through the end of his presidency. Finally, under the leadership of his successor, Northern became a four-year, bachelor’s-degree-granting institution in 1921.

【Chapter 3: Growth in Challenging Times】

1936-1952年

Northern’s Alumni Association was legally incorporated in 1936.Today, the NIUAA serves nearly 160,000 NIU alumni in Illinois and 244,000 worldwide. It offers programs, hosts events and partners with departments and organizations in support of NIU. 

1951年董事会允许NIU开设研究生课程。次年，J. Robert Hainds 博士被任命为研究生院的第一任院长。到 1960 年，已有 23 个院系提供通向硕士学位的研究生课程。

In 1951, the Board gave Northern permission to offer graduate courses. The following year, Dr. J. Robert Hainds was appointed as the first Dean of the Graduate School. By 1960, 23 departments were offering graduate courses leading to the master’s degree.

【Chapter 4: Birth of a University】

 第四章：大学的诞生 

1952-1961年

A new library, expanded graduate programs and a significant name change headline a decade of enormous growth in both enrollment and campus facilities. On May 23, 1957, Gov. Stratton signed the bill, and Northern Illinois University was born.

For a school that began as a teacher’s college and was governed by a body called the Teachers College Board, one can imagine the push-back that greeted every move away from the single-purpose institution. Faced with a strong need for more doctorate-holding faculty at the state’s growing public universities,  it 1958 NIU was approved to offer the Master of Arts and Master of Science degrees. The following year, the Master of Music and the Master of Fine Arts degrees joined the growing portfolio of graduate offerings.

The College of Business is established  in 1961. Nine years later, the College’s undergraduate program received the prestigious accreditation of the American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business, or AACSB. And by the end of the decade, nearly 5,000 NIU business degrees had been awarded.Today the NIU College of Business ranks among the best undergraduate business schools in the country. Closing in on its 60th anniversary in 2021, the College is one of few to enjoy a national ranking for 32 consecutive years. More than 60,000 alumni are business leaders throughout the Chicagoland region and around the world.
